 Jewelry
Fused glass jewellery is one of the most
unique and eye catching forms of jewellery available today. The amazing
lustre and depth of colour in dichroic glass is a huge part of its
appeal.
Our jewellery is handcrafted and individually cut piece by piece. Once a
design and colours are decided upon, the glass is layered and fired in a
kiln to 1600F. which is when the glass becomes molten and the individual
pieces fuse together. The glass must then be slowly cooled (annealing)
to prevent breakage. After some cold working, (grinding shapes on a
water-cooled grinder) the piece is returned to the kiln for what is
known as fire-polishing. This is a partial melt that takes away grind
marks and gives the piece depth. Once the pendant is again annealed ( a
few hours in the kiln again) it is ready to have either a bail attached
or to be routed around the outside. This creates a groove for
wire-wrapping the pendant.
The end result is beautiful and unique pieces of wearable art! The
wonderful shimmer and colour-shifting qualities are truly dazzling when
hit by light. I have never worn a piece of Dichroic jewellery without
someone asking me what I was wearing and where it came from!
Stop -you-in-the-street -gorgeous! I
might add that it is very difficult to stop at owning just one! What a
wonderful little indulgence !
My husband and I take great pride in our workmanship and are thrilled
with the overwhelming response we have received!
As we continue in our exploration of glass , you can expect to see many
new designs both in jewellery and in home decor

Now for those of you interested in the
science behind the art form I will explain Dichroic glass-
Dichroic glass is actually the result of NASA research early on in the
space program. Engineers were looking for transparent mediums that would
filter out unwanted spectrums of light .The result was dichroic glass, a
transparent medium that will reflect one colour and transmit another.
There are only a handful of companies in the world that create dichroic
glass, because it is a highly technical and expensive process. Quartz
crystal and metal oxides ( gold, silver, titanium, etc.) are vapourized
with an electron beam gun in an airless vacuum chamber. The vapour
floats upward and attaches, then condenses on the surface of the glass.
The colours can have as many as 30 layers of these materials, yet the
total thickness of the coating is about 35 millionths of an inch!
Once the art glass community discovered the concept, the creation of all
different colours ,textures and patterns in Dichroic glass for use by
artists began to explode.
Wow. Now that science class is over please come visit us at the Farmer's
Market and see it for yourself!
